For a fleeting moment, I was happy once again. “The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick” dropped on Amazon Prime on Sept. 16, reuniting fans with the three all-time favorite car show presenters.
I first discovered “Top Gear” in my later years of high school, and almost immediately I was hooked. Following the unfortunate departure of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond from the famed car show, Amazon rang them up and offered them a whole new car show with the seemingly unlimited financial support of Amazon Studios.
Unfortunately, the trio decided to abandon their traditional studio audience format, that they had followed for so many years, in favor of a limited special format. Although I really liked the studio audience version of the show, I understand why they needed to step away from it, given how much harder it became to produce, as they all got older.
“A Scandi Flick” is simply a boatload of fun, there's no better way to put it. Tasked with showing off rally inspired sports cars, the three guys start a trip across Scandinavia, which they refer to as “Europe's last great wilderness.”
It is very obvious that the entire episode is heavily scripted, which can be disappointing at times having seen previous specials which didn't feel so scripted, and much more natural. That being said, I didn't mind. The guys still brought their usual charm and tomfoolery, bringing laughs throughout the entire episode.
The most frightening part of the whole spectacle was the very near misses with death that James experienced multiple times during the episode. What made it worse is that both events were clearly not planned as we nearly saw the end of James May.
The best thing to come from the episode was the way it personified the cars featured. Hammond went with a classic Subaru Impreza, May with a frisky Mitsubushi Evo and Clarkson, being the idiot that he is, brought an Audi RS4, a car which is not in fact a rally car. You know you've connected with something on screen when you find yourself cheering for it. And that is exactly what I was doing with the little Evo that could. I have never seen a car go through more torture than that Evo, despite that, James May kept it going and refused to let it succumb to the damage it sustained during the trip.
Honestly, this was such an amazing episode and I love to see Clarkson, May and Hammond still faffing about. I am really looking forward to seeing what they plan on doing next, I just hope it lives up to the standards that they set in “A Scandi Flick”.
One final thing that added a touch of greatness was the credits in which they spoofed the “found footage” montage from “The Hangover”. After a full episode of laughs, they couldn't help throwing in one last opportunity to get me to crack up. Overall I give this 9 rods thrown out of 10.
